Shall I Compare You to a Summer’s Day?
In this contemporary queer musical from Egyptian director Mohammad Shawky Hassan, soft speaking voices and a dreamlike soundscape of Egyptian pop music combine to create an almost hallucinatory cinematic experience. Based on a diary of the filmmaker’s personal love stories, and told in the form of a tale from “One Thousand and One Nights,” Hassan’s film gives us a glimpse into the sensual experiences of gay Egyptian men. Telling their stories with humor, tenderness and wit, the power of prose commands attention and allows viewers to be completely swept up in Hassan’s unique vision. With gorgeous colors, handsome actors and imaginative editing, Shall I Compare You To a Summer’s Day? is a truly unique gay fantasia.

 

A Dim Valley
Ecology grad students Albert and Ian (Whitmer Thomas and Zach Weintraub) are spending the summer collecting samples with their curmudgeonly advisor (Robert Longstreet). At his woodsy cabin along the Appalachian Trail, close quarters foster comical friction and unexpected bonds between the two young men. When three mysterious, enigmatic female backpackers (Rachel McKeon, Feathers Wise and Rosalie Lowe) crash into their lives, they push the men to open up to one another and their true feelings soon begin to deepen. A clever new indie gem from writer-director Brandon Colvin, A Dim Valley is partly a queer allegory, partly a hilarious stoner comedy and partly a transcendental meditation on mysticism and love.

 

Brothers of the Night
Good looks can be a blessing and a curse. Against the backdrop of Vienna’s skyline live the underdogs of respectable society. Sporting their leather jackets like suits of armor, these Bulgarian hotties pose, play and seduce “young Marlon Brando-style.” They moved to Vienna in search of adventure and a quick buck, but poverty has drawn them to sell their bodies instead. Sucked into an inescapable nocturnal life, they spend their nights servicing lonely male admirers. A cutting-edge, relentlessly stylish pseudo-documentary, Brothers of the Night is earning raves. According to Filmstarts “had Fassbinder made a documentary about Viennese prostitutes, it would look like this.” Les Inrockuptibles said that “it’s a film of real beauty.”

 

Mr. Leather
In April of 2018, São Paulo played host to the 2nd annual Brazilian Mr. Leather competition… and things got heated. Mr. Leather offers up a front-row seat – and takes you deep behind the scenes – as five individual contestants vie for full leather dominance. The winner will be crowned by Dom Barbudo, the first official Mr. Leather of Brazil. Along with victory comes a year-long commitment to promoting the leather community throughout the country, even in the face of increasingly conservative values and political unrest. Making his feature film debut, writer-director Daniel Nolasco follows all the action, creating gorgeous and intensely provocative compositions that celebrate the unique power of this thriving subculture.

 

You Can’t Escape Lithuania
After Indre (Irina Lavrinovic), his star actor, murders her mother, wealthy and egocentric filmmaker Romas (Denisas Kolomyckis) decides to help her escape Lithuania. Carlos (Adrian Escobar), Romas’ incredibly attractive Mexican boyfriend, reluctantly joins the trip. On the road, Romas starts shooting an improvised experimental film, provoking Marta and Carlos for his art and personal amusement. As events take an unexpected turn, the trio’s secrets, memories and emotions make this journey wilder than any film Romas could have envisioned. From prolific director Romas Zabarauskas, You Can’t Escape Lithuania is a tense and insightful road movie about the making of art, the intricacies of relationships… and murder.

The Carnival
From acclaimed, prolific filmmaker Marco Berger (The Blonde One, Young Hunter, Taekwondo), The Carnival is a clever new pseudo-documentary which centers around two men who grew up in the town of Gualeguaychú, a city in the east of Argentina near the border of Uruguay. Every summer, they participate in the town’s traditional carnival, which transforms the men of the community into Dionysian figures via costumes, glitter and feathers. While Berger captures the action – and the mostly straight male participants’ bodies – he also blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction, adding his unique cinematic spin, homoerotic themes and eye for dynamic male relationships to color and comment on the proceedings.

Everything at Once
A  deeply seductive new documentary, Everything at Once profiles Paco Moyano and Manolo Rodriguez, two Catalan photographers who have been together for thirty years. Their simple yet sophisticated style records the sex appeal of working class men, using natural light and abandoned locations. With great compassion and understanding, Paco and Manolo build an intimate relationship with their subjects, capturing not only their bare bodies but their inhibitions and hidden depths as well. In the end, they reveal just as much about themselves as they do the nude men in front of their cameras. Everything At Once tells a beautiful story of two fascinating artists and a special relationship that has lasted for three decades.

Chemsex
Cruising through hidden basements, bedrooms and bars across London, the startling documentary Chemsex from directors William Fairman and Max Gogarty frankly and intimately exposes a dark side to modern gay life. Traversing an underworld of intravenous drug use and weekend-long sex parties, this stunning documentary tells the story of several men struggling to make it out of “the scene” alive – and one health worker who has made it his mission to save them. While society looks the other way, this powerful and unflinching film uncovers a group of men battling HIV as well as drug and sex addiction while trying to find acceptance in a changing – and incredibly challenging – world.

Seed Money
Seed Money tells the the fascinating and largely unknown story of Chuck Holmes, the San Francisco pornographer who founded Falcon Studios. As a major contributor to gay advocacy groups, Holmes helped create and shape gay identity in the 20th century, only to find out that while his money was welcome in philanthropic circles, he sometimes was not. Funny, candid and completely eye-opening, this feature-length doc is packed with mind-blowing archival footage as well as interviews with notable figures, including Chi Chi LaRue, Jeff Stryker, Scissor Sisters front-man Jake Shears and John Waters. Learn all about one of the gay community’s most unheralded heroes – seems like it’s the least we can do for him!

Night Disclosure
When Marc (José D. Álvarez), a young real estate agent, celebrates a recent big sale over a nightcap with his married boss, Tom (Sean Patrick Murtagh), he soon finds himself in dangerous waters. The night – and their intense verbal back-and-forth – lead them to question their dynamic and push the boundaries of trust, monogamy and open relationships. A smart, sexy and well-crafted new thirteen-minute short film from A.J. Mattioli (the prolific writer-producer-director behind films like Neon Boys, Mass, Your Eyes on Me, Miles, Tooth 4 Tooth, Innocent Boy and many more), Night Disclosure presents a titillating scenario where there is actually much more going on than initially meets the eye.

 

Horror, Sex and Hair Curlers
Francose (Karine Lyachenko) is spying on her husband Robert (Olivier Ruidavet). She suspects that he may be cheating on her – and the intuitive hairdresser is right to trust her instincts. She soon spots Robert stepping inside a gay sex club with an alluring, leather-clad young man (Jordan Large), as handsome as he is mysterious. Francose is furious, but she has no idea how weird and horrific this day is about to get! Funny, sexy and stylish, Horror, Sex and Hair Curlers is an award-winning eighteen-minute short film from from French director Philippe Solange, who blends horror and comedy into one wild ride that takes an unexpected turn.

 

Kiss Me, Kill Me
Dusty (Van Hansis) blacks out while confronting his cheating boyfriend Stephen (Gale Harold). When Dusty comes to, he finds that Stephen has been murdered… and now he’s the prime suspect. But West Hollywood is filled with other possible perpetrators: an unstable lawyer, a couples’ therapist, a jealous ex, a sketchy best friend, a resentful lesbian couple, and a drag queen hypnotist. Now Dusty must put all the pieces together to figure out what really happened – even if it means he’s guilty of murder. Kiss Me, Kill Me is a riveting gay thriller from director Casper Andreas (The Big Gay Musical, Violet Tendencies, Going Down in La-La Land).

 

Darkroom
In Darkroom, pioneering cult director Rosa von Praunheim focuses his lens on a recent, true criminal case involving a German serial killer. Lars (Bozidar Kocevski), a male nurse, moves with his lover Roland (Heiner Bomhard). They renovate an apartment with the intention of finally living together. For Roland, their happiness seems almost complete. What he doesn’t know, however, is that while secretly checking out Berlin’s nightlife, Lars is experimenting with a deadly poison – an obsession that will lead to a horrific outcome for the couple. Using a psychiatric tribunal as a framing device, Von Praunheim balances Lars’ twisted fantasies with Roland’s dreams of a blissful romance.

Dry Wind
A gloriously erotic new film from Brazilian director Daniel Nolasco, Dry Wind follows factory worker Sandro (Leandro Faria Lelo) as he escapes his rural boredom via secret trysts with his co-worker Ricardo (Allan Jacinto Santana) – and through elaborate sexual fantasies that would make Tom of Finland himself blush. Though his sex life is in full swing, Sandro shies away from any emotional attachment, preferring to imagine worlds of anonymity, leather and unbridled fetish-play – which Nolasco brings to stunning life in color-drenched widescreen glory. When a new arrival to town (Rafael Teóphilo) – a certified hunk straight out of Sandro’s dreams – sets his sights on Ricardo, Sandro finds himself brimming with jealousy and fearing exclusion from the kind of romance he never thought he wanted.

 

The Family Tree
Victor (Keith Roenke) is a lonely workaholic who rescues animals for a local shelter. He has always loved the end of the year holiday celebrations. Since he was a young boy, he would create explosive life size dolls made from newspaper and fireworks to celebrate. However, this holiday season will prove unforgettable as Victor’s latest creation (Michael Joseph Nelson) comes magically to life to disrupt and enlighten him on the true meaning of love, friendship and family. Life, as he knows it, is about to change. The holiday specter will teach him to cherish the moments that makes lasting memories, as what was once is no more. The Family Tree is an unusual new gay Christmas romance from prolific indie director Jorge Ameer.

 

Dirtwoman
Described as “a living, breathing John Waters movie,” the delightfully profane and surprisingly tender new documentary Dirtwoman puts a spotlight on the late, great Donnie “Dirtwoman” Corker, a drag legend of Richmond, Virginia. A gay pioneer, mayoral candidate (and inauguration crasher), mud wrestler, rock star, pin-up model, dog food gourmet and all-around dirty diva, he was one of Richmond’s most well-known counterculture personalities. As a cross-dressing drag performer, Donnie embodied the spirit of the city through his uniqueness, his individuality, dedication and good deeds. Packed with interviews and intimate, often hysterically funny footage, director Jerry Williams has crafted a loving and deeply engaging tribute to a unique icon. Dirtwoman will make you laugh while warming your heart.

 

Treacle
From screenwriter-star April Kelley and director Rosie Westhoff, the new 18-minute short film Treacle tells the story of Belle (Kelley) and Jessie (Ariana Anderson), two friends who go on a weekend getaway together to help Jessie get over a recent breakup. Road-tripping through California, we follow them over the course of 24 hours as Belle convinces Jessie to not cancel the trip she’d originally planned to go on with her ex. Lines begin to blur between them when the always-heterosexual Jessie, in her drunken, post breakup loneliness, kisses the bisexual Belle. In collaboration with the Bisexual Resource Center, the film supports the notion that bisexuality isn’t just a phase or an experiment nor is the ‘B’ there to just help the acronym roll off the tongue.

Caught in a Landslide
What does it truly feel like to be lonely? A boy ravished, worn and depleted encounters a journey in his mind. Through a combination of pharmaceuticals and alcohol, Jay (Wade Radford) walks through memories of true love and attempts to understand his broken heart. Nightly his resident ghost (Robbie Manners) appears conjuring up visions of a lost summer romance; continuously taunting him with the opportunity to speak words previously unspoken. Jay wrestles with the past to separate fact from fiction, trying desperately to cast out the specter of emotional torment. In a film that combines imagery, poetry and the reality of loss, Caught in a Landslide takes the viewer from the beauty of England’s garden landscapes, to the darkness of a broken mind.

 

Out in the Dark
Out in the Dark follows a young, affluent and ambitious Palestinian grad student and a Jewish lawyer who fall in love. The adorable Nimr (Nicholas Jacob) crosses the border to study and occasionally to meet his friends at a gay nightclub in Tel Aviv. One night, he is introduced to the handsome and wealthy Roy (Michael Aloni) and an instant attraction ensues. While Tel Aviv is ostensibly more accepting of Palestinians being present, Nimr’s homeland is not. He struggles to keep the peace with his Muslim family – especially his brother, who is now a member of a radical, extremist anti-Palestinian organization. Despite being surrounded by all of these weighty (and sometimes dangerous) obstacles, the budding couple cannot help but fall immensely in love. Everything soon comes to a gripping head. Nimr is to choose between the life he once dreamed of… or Roy, his true love.

 

Aya Arcos
Writer-director Maximilian Moll’s first feature film, Aya Arcos, roams with its two unequal heroes around a never-cooling Rio de Janeiro, a city in which beauty and melancholy, life’s ease and its difficulty, often go side by side. Fabio (Daniel Passi) is a 21-year-old hustler working the heady streets of Rio when he meets Edu (Cesar Augusto), a successful author. They soon embark on a passionate and wild relationship. But whilse Fabio is sexually adventurous and carefree, Edu is far more protective. With several demons from his past that he has yet to face, Edu finds emotional connections difficult to maintain. The pair must try to navigate a path together – can they really live for the moment, or will the realities of life crush them completely? An official selection at the Montreal World Film Festival and the Torino Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Aya Arcos infuses its troubled May-December relationship with serious sexual intensity.

Journey into the unique world of male stripping in this follow-up to the popular doc All Male, All Nude. This brand-new sequel is set in Florida’s newest gay strip club, Johnsons, located in Florida – home to the creator and owner Matt Colunga, an award-winning body builder who has been in the male entertainment industry for over twenty-three years. From 42-year-old Matt, to 26-year-old Alexander, who spends his days dressed as Spider-Man creating early memories for children at kid parties and spends his nights stripping down to his G-String for gay men, to single fathers and young men putting themselves through college with their stripping income, to entertainers in the adult film world – the men who compose the heart of Johnsons are diverse, unique, captivating and super sexy!

M/M
Matthew (Antoine Lahaie) is a young Canadian trying to make a fresh start in Berlin, but he feels the isolation of living in a strange, new city. When he meets the beautiful and charismatic Matthias (Nicolas Maxim Endlicher), he is immediately entranced. Soon Matthew’s interest escalates, becoming an obsession. He begins to transform himself to embody the object of his desire, cutting his hair, and getting new clothes. When Matthias gets into a motorcycle accident, the opportunity is too perfect. Matthew can now become Matthias. In a coma in the hospital, Matthias’ waking life, dreams and memories blur. Where the real ends, the artificial begins.
