Happiness Adjacent

2017, United States

Happiness Adjacent explores the romance that blossoms between Hank (Adam Fried), a nice gay Jewish boy traveling alone on a tropical cruise, and Kurt (Ian Dick), a bisexual man vacationing with his wife, Kate (Rachel Alig). While Hank isn’t looking for a relationship, he can’t deny his immediate attraction to Kurt and their intense connection. As Hank struggles to get past his own issues and his past failed relationships, he can’t help but wonder if Kurt is secretly looking for a way to break up the monotony of his seemingly stale marriage. Is this just a vacation fling, or is it a chance for both men to find true happiness? Shot entirely on location on the iPhone 6S Plus, Happiness Adjacent is the terrific ninth feature film from writer/director Rob Williams – the same guy behind Shared Rooms, The Men Next Door and Make the Yuletide Gay.

Blue Briefs

2012, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States

Following on the heels of Black Briefs, their first successful short film compilation (which we featured in this series last week), Guest House Films (the production company and distribution house from Rob Williams – the director behind Role/Play3-Day Weekend, Make the Yuletide Gay and the brand-new Happiness Adjacent) continued their series with Blue Briefs. This brilliant, engrossing and emotional collection features stellar gay shorts that focus on relationships and the unfortunate pain that often accompanies true love (something that most gay men know all too well). The collection includes the films Requited by Sal Bardo, Boys Like You by Daniel Armando, We Once Were Tide by Jason Bradbury, Revolution by Abdi Nazemian, The In-Between by Alain Hain and Frozen Roads by Mark Pariselli.

Black Briefs

2012, United States

Curated by prolific writer/director Rob Williams (Make the Yuletide GayShared Rooms) for his distribution label Guest House Films, Black Briefs features six award-winning short films with pretty dark, horror or horror-adjacent stories and themes. When it comes to short film compilations, there is always something to recommend. If you don’t like the first one, chances are good there is a short just around the corner that you’re going to appreciate more. In Black Briefs, we really like Hong Khaou‘s steamy Spring, about a young man meets up with a stranger for a little exploratory sadomasochistic sex; and Jack Plotnick‘s Video Night, in which a group of filmmaker buddies discover something unexpected in their raw footage. Our favorite, though, is Greg Ivan Smith‘s Remission. A man, all alone in a secluded cabin awaiting the results of a serious medical test, is haunted by a terrifying presence. It’s genuinely chilling and it’s one of those rare movies that can create dread and unease even in its scenes set during the daytime.

Available Light

2015, United States, France and Germany

Available Light is a sexy, funny and even sometimes disturbing experimental feature film by prolific writer/director/actor/artist Todd Verow – the same guy behind Frisk, Anonymous, Vacationland and Bad Boy Street. The film follows numerous unconnected people in different cities as they try to escape their loneliness through love, lust or some combination of both. The film was shot in real locations using only available light (hence the title). The viewer is both a voyeur, watching the characters in intimate situations that are not meant to be seen, and an active participant, imagining what the characters are going through and making connections between them that may or may not be real. And, as anyone who is familiar with Verow‘s previous work could probably guess, there is plenty of hot male flesh on display.

Chaser

2013, United States

Alienated from his conservative Jewish family and community, a young gay schoolteacher seeks solace in New York’s anonymous barebacking scene. Challenging and controversial, Chaser is a stunning 15-minute short that created quite a lot of buzz at film festivals all over the world. Chaser is packed with beautifully photographed, carnal imagery you won’t soon forget. Sal Bardo is a skilled writer-director-actor worth keeping an eye on. His earlier short film Requited is also currently available in the compilation Blue Briefs. Lead actor Max Rhyser gives a fearless, incredibly raw performance as a seemingly ordinary guy driven by sexual appetites.
