Writer-director Elegance Bratton‘s deeply moving, expertly-acted and crafted new drama The Inspection is inspired by his own story.
Jeremy Pope stars as a young, gay Black man who has been rejected by his homophobic mother (Gabrielle Union). With few other options for his future, he decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would just as easily cast him aside. But even as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the grueling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength and support in this new community – giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life.
Nominated for countless awards – and a current Oscar hopeful – The Inspection is easily one of the past year’s best gay movies. We ranked in #1 on our list of favorites from 2022. The performances are stunning across the board, but both Jeremy Pope and Gabrielle Union are particularly revelatory. We can’t wait to see what Elegance Bratton does next.
