Out This Week: Supernova

“It’s rare to see a cinematic drama executed with such consistent care as Supernova,” – Glenn Kenny, The New York Times

“Tucci and Firth have never been better than they are here, and they earn every superlative that has been laid on them in early reviews.” – Michael O’Sullivan, The Washington Post

Supernova is modest in every respect except its emotional impact. In the characters’ internal arcs, the title—the name for a stellar explosion—comes fully into perspective.” – Karen Han, Slate

“With these two actors in command, Supernova doesn’t just dare to speak the name of a love between two deeply committed men facing an untenable situation. It shouts it from the rooftops.” – Steve Davis, The Austin Chronicle

“In a story that is as heartfelt as it is heartbreaking, Supernova is a moving look at the emotional toll that dementia can have on the powerless sufferer and their selfless caretaker, revealing that one can never have too much time with their loved ones.” – Max Gao, Observer

“The award-winning duo are like a well-worn sweater onscreen, comfortable and lived-in, showing the kind of tart affection people show when ardor’s lust has given way to the slow burn of adoration.” – Mark Kennedy, Associated Press

“It’s a movie that finds most of its power through silence—the proud and yet pained look Tucci gives to Firth during that speech will stick with me for a long time.” – Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

Written and directed by Harry Macqueen (Hinterland), Supernova is a heartrending modern love story about a couple struggling with a diagnosis of early-onset dementia who take a road trip together to reconnect with friends, family and places from their past.

Sam (Colin Firth) and Tusker (Stanley Tucci), partners of twenty years, are travelling across England in their old campervan. Following the life-changing diagnosis, their time together has become more important than ever until secret plans test their love like never before.
