Animals

2012, Spain

David Lynch meets Donnie Darko in this stylish coming-of-age tale that explores the exciting but troubling moment when sexuality enters into a young man’s worldview. Seventeen-year-old high school student Pol (Oriol Pla) pals around with Deerhoof, his opinionated, drums-playing, English-speaking teddy bear. But Pol’s child-like world is threatened when he meets an alluring and potentially dangerous new student. Gorgeous cinematography, a rousing soundtrack and several strong supporting cast members including Martin Freeman (of The Office and The Hobbit fame) help make Animals an unpredictable and unconventional supernatural drama.

The Boy with the Sun in His Eyes

2009, United States

The untimely funeral of a friend rockets John (Tim Swain) into the orbit of the flamboyant Solange (Mahogany Reynolds), a B-movie actress/one hit wonder musician best known in Europe for her roles in 80’s Italian horror movies. John soon follows her into heady whirlwind romances with cute French pop stars and deadly (but hot!) Milanese model managers. They barely survive murderous performance artists in Paris and fatal gourmet food poisonings in Italy. John begins to realize that Solange’s world is far more complex and dangerous than he could possibly have imagined. Her chosen lifestyle abounds with trips, tricks and traps. Based on the novel by James Derek Dwyer, prolific underground filmmaker Todd Verow‘s The Boy with the Sun in His Eyes is a sexy-smart absurdist comedy that doubles as an homage to 1980’s trash cinema favorites.

Do You Take This Man

2016, United States

Anthony Rapp may be in a lot of recent headlines thanks to his bravery in being the first to publicly out Kevin Spacey as a massive creep, but lets not forget that he’s an excellent actor who heads up some terrific gay-themed movies. Here, he leads an impressive ensemble cast in a touching comedy-drama about a long-term gay couple having last-minute jitters before they get married. On the eve of their wedding, Daniel (Rapp) and Christopher (Mean Girls heartthrob Jonathan Bennett) are having their closest friends and family over for dinner. But when a long-lost friend of Christopher’s shows up unexpectedly, and their already stressful day spirals out of control, the couple realizes they must rely on the kindness of their pals and relatives to get through the event in one piece. Co-starring familiar faces like Thomas Dekker, Mackenzie Astin, Marla Sokoloff and “How I Met Your Mother” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star Alyson Hannigan, Do You Take This Man is a realistic and absorbing look into what it takes to make a relationship work in this day and age.
