Daytime Doorman tracks the burgeoning desire between a tenant and his sexy doorman. Xavier charts the beginnings of desire when a father notices his son only pays attention to certain types of boys. The Other Side is about the frustrations of unfulfilled desire when the object of your lust is beyond reach – literally. Instantly smitten with one another, Lily invites Finn is to spend the week with her at her family’s opulent home in Sussex. Conveniently, her parents are away on vacation in Italy. But their romantic break is disrupted when Lily’s seductive brother Jamie (George Stocks) discovers a revealing secret about Finn, and uses it to play a dangerous and sinister game with his sister’s new flame. Written, directed and produced by brothers Eadward, David and George Stocks, Palace of Fun is a compelling psychological drama that wears the influence of Patricia Highsmith’s “Ripley” novels on its sleeve.
Confessions
Take a peak under the surface of any gay man… and who knows what you’ll find? Originally conceived as a web-series, but collected into an anthology film by writer-director Mark Bessenger (The Last Straight Man, Bite Marks), the unique and wildly entertaining Confessions features ten individual segments, each four-to-fifteen minutes in length, in which numerous gay male characters disclose various secrets from the recesses of their psyches. Each segment utilizes a different storytelling genre – there’s something here for fans of comedy, horror, drama, romance, musicals and more. The cast also includes many faces that will be familiar to gay movie fans like Peter Stickles, Mark Cirillo and Dylan Vox.
Play the Devil
In Play the Devil, a smart and stylishly coming-of-age drama from writer-director Maria Govan, the prevailing poverty and lush beauty of Trinidad and the pulsating rhythms of Carnival are backdrop to a story where dreams and obsession collide. Eighteen-year-old Gregory (Petrice Jones) is caught between repressing his true creative nature and desires and surrendering to society’s dictates of what it means to be a man. An encounter with a lecherous older businessman (Gareth Jenkins) derails the plans set by his family and community. Play The Devil shatters conventions of sexuality, masculinity, morality and individuality through its unapologetic multi-layered explorations of power dynamics, religion and aspirations.
Copa 181
A bathhouse in Rio is the setting for the gentle and sexy human drama Copa 181. Struggling opera singer Eros (Simone Mazzer) doesn’t know that her husband Tana (Carlos Takeshi) spends his afternoons at a gay club. When she’s hired to sing there, her surprise appearance sets up a clash as the couple finally discover one another’s long-held secrets. Meanwhile, hunky “gay for pay” male escort Leo (Caetano O’Mailhlan) finds himself developing feelings for Kika (Silvero Pereira), a charismatic trans performer. Like almost everyone at the bathhouse, Kika yearns for Leo as well, but his deep-seated anger and conflicted feelings about his own sexuality threaten to ruin their romance before it even has a chance to begin.
