Shall I Compare You to a Summer’s Day?
In this contemporary queer musical from Egyptian director Mohammad Shawky Hassan, soft speaking voices and a dreamlike soundscape of Egyptian pop music combine to create an almost hallucinatory cinematic experience. Based on a diary of the filmmaker’s personal love stories, and told in the form of a tale from “One Thousand and One Nights,” Hassan’s film gives us a glimpse into the sensual experiences of gay Egyptian men. Telling their stories with humor, tenderness and wit, the power of prose commands attention and allows viewers to be completely swept up in Hassan’s unique vision. With gorgeous colors, handsome actors and imaginative editing, Shall I Compare You To a Summer’s Day? is a truly unique gay fantasia.

A Dim Valley
Ecology grad students Albert and Ian (Whitmer Thomas and Zach Weintraub) are spending the summer collecting samples with their curmudgeonly advisor (Robert Longstreet). At his woodsy cabin along the Appalachian Trail, close quarters foster comical friction and unexpected bonds between the two young men. When three mysterious, enigmatic female backpackers (Rachel McKeon, Feathers Wise and Rosalie Lowe) crash into their lives, they push the men to open up to one another and their true feelings soon begin to deepen. A clever new indie gem from writer-director Brandon Colvin, A Dim Valley is partly a queer allegory, partly a hilarious stoner comedy and partly a transcendental meditation on mysticism and love.

Brothers of the Night
Good looks can be a blessing and a curse. Against the backdrop of Vienna’s skyline live the underdogs of respectable society. Sporting their leather jackets like suits of armor, these Bulgarian hotties pose, play and seduce “young Marlon Brando-style.” They moved to Vienna in search of adventure and a quick buck, but poverty has drawn them to sell their bodies instead. Sucked into an inescapable nocturnal life, they spend their nights servicing lonely male admirers. A cutting-edge, relentlessly stylish pseudo-documentary, Brothers of the Night is earning raves. According to Filmstarts “had Fassbinder made a documentary about Viennese prostitutes, it would look like this.” Les Inrockuptibles said that “it’s a film of real beauty.”

Mr. Leather
In April of 2018, São Paulo played host to the 2nd annual Brazilian Mr. Leather competition… and things got heated. Mr. Leather offers up a front-row seat – and takes you deep behind the scenes – as five individual contestants vie for full leather dominance. The winner will be crowned by Dom Barbudo, the first official Mr. Leather of Brazil. Along with victory comes a year-long commitment to promoting the leather community throughout the country, even in the face of increasingly conservative values and political unrest. Making his feature film debut, writer-director Daniel Nolasco follows all the action, creating gorgeous and intensely provocative compositions that celebrate the unique power of this thriving subculture.

You Can’t Escape Lithuania
After Indre (Irina Lavrinovic), his star actor, murders her mother, wealthy and egocentric filmmaker Romas (Denisas Kolomyckis) decides to help her escape Lithuania. Carlos (Adrian Escobar), Romas’ incredibly attractive Mexican boyfriend, reluctantly joins the trip. On the road, Romas starts shooting an improvised experimental film, provoking Marta and Carlos for his art and personal amusement. As events take an unexpected turn, the trio’s secrets, memories and emotions make this journey wilder than any film Romas could have envisioned. From prolific director Romas Zabarauskas, You Can’t Escape Lithuania is a tense and insightful road movie about the making of art, the intricacies of relationships… and murder.

Why Not You
Mario (Thomas Prenn), a sensitive young dancer, finds difficulty in the day-to-day life of his small Italian village. At a local festival, he reunites with Lenz (Noah Saavedra), a former childhood friend who left town long ago. Mario quickly becomes fixated on Lenz, who is now living out his dreams as an actor in Rome. Inspired, Mario decides to follow his friend to the Italian capital. When they meet in a gay bar, the night takes a tragic turn. Escaping unharmed, Mario’s life will be forever altered by the incident and the loss that follows. The debut feature of writer-director Evi Romen, Why Not You is a challenging character drama, following a disoriented young man who senses that he must find a place for himself in the world.

Boy Undone
Two young men (Eduardo Longoria and Paul Act) spend the night together after meeting the previous evening in a notorious gay club. The next day, however, the host wakes to find the boy he picked up bewildered and confused, unable remember his name or anything about his past. Lacking any type of identification or obvious clues, the two young men begin to search for the truth among fragments of memories that may or may not prove reliable. A chilling homoerotic thriller from prolific Mexican writer-director Leopoldo Laborde (A Beautiful Secret, Sin Destino), Boy Undone is edgy, erotic, sex-and-nudity-packed queer guerrilla filmmaking at its most intense.

Breaking Glass Pictures presents this sensational collection of sexy short films from around the world. Male Shorts: International V1 features five flicks guaranteed to get your pulse racing. Directed by Travis Mathews (Interior. Leather Bar., I Want Your Love), Just Past Noon on a Tuesday concerns two strangers who get intimate when they meet after the death of a mutual lover. The Mousetrap follows a straight dude who goes on an unexpected sexual journey. The Storm is about a guy who has the hots for his weather forecaster. In Neptune, a chance encounter at a bath house turns into an obsession. Finally, the film PD adapts Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream… with lots of staggeringly hot naked studs.

A gorgeous feature-length debut from talented writer-director Nils-Erik Ekblom, Screwed takes us to the Finnish countryside for an unforgettably romantic summer. 17-year-old Miku (Mikko Kauppila) is trying to come to terms with his sexuality. After his parents find out that he threw a wild party while they were away, he is ordered to spend the summer with them at their cottage. A flirtation soon develops between he and Elias (Valtteri Lehtinen), the irresistible boy next door. As they spend the summer together, escaping the turmoil offered up by their uniquely dysfunctional families, a passionate relationship quickly blossoms. But the boys soon realize that love is not as easy as it seems… especially when it comes to first love.

The Prince
The Prince is an explosive new homoerotic drama set in a repressive 1970s Chilean prison. During a night of heavy drinking, Jaime (Juan Carlos Maldonado), a hot-tempered narcissist, suddenly stabs his best friend. He is sent to jail for murder and there, alone and afraid, he comes under the protection of a tough older inmate known as The Stallion (Alfredo Castro). The unlikely pair begin a clandestine romance but violent power struggles inside the penitentiary threaten their bond. This searing story of survival at all costs, takes its inspiration from Jean Genet’s Un Chant d’amour and Fassbinder’s Querelle in its affecting exploration of masculine aggression, conflicting loyalties and pent-up sexual desires. “For most people, this would be a horror scenario,” said The Hollywood Reporter. “But this feature is such a work of homoerotic fantasy… that the protagonist doesn’t mind being locked away with a bunch of handsy, well-endowed inmates for even one hot minute.” Warning: This film contains extremely graphic sexual content. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.

Animals
David Lynch meets Donnie Darko in this stylish coming-of-age tale from visionary Spanish filmmaker Marcal Fores. Animals explores the exciting but troubling moment when sexuality enters into a young man’s world. Seventeen-year-old high school student Pol (Oriol Pla) still pals around with Deerhoof, his opinionated, drums-playing, English-speaking teddy bear. But Pol’s child-like world is threatened when he meets an alluring and potentially dangerous new male student (Augustus Prew) who sparks some primal sexual feelings buried deep inside. Gorgeous cinematography, a rousing soundtrack and several strong supporting cast members, including Martin Freeman (of The Office and The Hobbit series) help make Animals an unpredictable, unconventional and intentionally strange teen drama.

A Closer Walk with Thee
A Closer Walk with Thee is a subversive little provocation we really enjoy. Jordan (Aj Knight), a young Christian missionary, gets caught watching his handsome pastor Eli (Gregory Shelby) in the shower. The rest of his church ostracizes him until Eli (who happens to be a fledgling exorcist) suggests it may be demonic possession that’s giving Jordan his ungodly homosexual urges. What starts as an exorcism to save their friendship quickly descends into psycho-sexual madness. An award-winner at film festivals, A Closer with Thee has earned some rave reviews from horror film critics, Cineounx said it’s “like what would happen if someone handed Todd Solondz as exorcism script and said, ‘knock yourself out'” and Parade said it “Mixes exorcism, homoeroticism and evangelistic angst in a combo that clearly doesn’t cater to the Sunday School crowd.” On top of everything else, the lead actors really make the screen sizzle. Their “hot young pastor and obedient church boy” dynamic is definite dirty-fantasy fuel.

Mass
In the brand-new 12-minute short film MASS, Trey (writer-director-star Linus Ignatius) finds his usual body dysmorphia is compounded by the fact that he is HIV-positive, and pretty freshly diagnosed. He’s soon stuck in the middle of a perfect storm of “I am not enough” feelings. At night, he invites a macho, joyless man over to take advantage of him in the bedroom, and we see how Trey, in his self-loathing, brings people into his life who abuse him – reinforcing his role as the victim. But there is a happy ending – as the next day dawns, and Trey continues on with his bulking progress, he becomes one pound heavier than the day before. A sexy, stylish and thought-provoking short film, MASS is now available to rent or download at TLAgay.

Permanent Green Light
Roman (Benjamin Sulpice) seems like a normal teenager. He plays video games, draws, hangs out with his friends. All the normal stuff. But under the surface he’s made a decision… a decision to explode. Literally. He wants to do it in public. He’s not suicidal. He has no ideology. He’s not interested in “heaven” or in going there. He doesn’t want people to misinterpret his explosion as a suicide. He doesn’t want people to misinterpret the explosion as his death. This second collaboration between cult novelist Dennis Cooper and filmmaker Zac Farley is, in the words of Paper Magazine, “a brilliant, disturbing, but darkly rewarding experience.” Anyone familiar with their previous film, Like Cattle Towards Glow, will have an idea of the deeply subversive piece of work on offer with Permanent Green Light.
