Out This Week: Call Me by Your Name

In a staggering year full of excellent, high-profile gay-themed movies (see also: Tom of FinlandBeach RatsBPM (Beats Per Minute) and God’s Own Country) Call Me by Your Name stands as a massive, towering achievement. Not only did we name the movie #1 on our “Best Gay Movies of 2017” list, but Call Me By Your Name earned a spot on most reputable critical top ten lists for the year. It’s also currently nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by the great James Ivory, based on the 2007 novel of the same name by André Aciman, the film chronicles the romantic relationship between Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a 17-year-old living in Italy, and his father’s American assistant, Oliver (Armie Hammer). A massive critical hit at the Sundance Film Festival, Call Me by Your Name is shaping up to be – easily – one of the most anticipated gay-themed movies of the year.

 

Lavishly directed by Luca Guadagnino, (I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, the upcoming Suspiria remake), Call Me By Your Name stars Armie Hammer as a 24-year-old student who visits Italy in the early 1980s and develops a relationship with a sensitive 17-year-old played by impressive up-and-comer Timothée Chalamet.
