With I Don’t Know Who You Are, writer-director M. H. Murray has turned a harrowing real-life experience into a tense and eye-opening feature-length film debut.
After a traumatic encounter with a stranger, Toronto musician Benjamin (Mark Clennon) must pull together the money for HIV-preventive treatment, in the event that he’s been exposed to the virus, while also avoiding the man (Anthony Diaz) he’s just started dating.
With inner conflicts bubbling to the surface, I Don’t Know Who You Are examines how hard it is to exist in Toronto without money or status. Benjamin’s increasingly fraught visits to his friends serve as a tour through the city’s unspoken class system, shading in further aspects of his mounting anxiety.
Featuring a revelatory debut performance by Clennon, a Toronto-based artist and poet who also served as the film’s producer and story editor – and wrote and performed Benjamin’s songs – I Don’t Know Who You Are is one of the year’s most bracing and unforgettable gay films.
