It’s time to get excited for Happiness Adjacent, the ninth feature film produced by Guest House Films and directed by award-winning filmmaker Rob Williams, the same highly prolific indie writer-director behind Long-Term Relationship, Back Soon, 3-Day Weekend, Role/Play, The Men Next Door, Out to Kill, Shared Rooms and Make the Yuletide Gay! It’s coming out on DVD THIS WEEK!
Happiness Adjacent explores the romance between Hank (Adam Fried), a nice gay Jewish boy traveling alone on a tropical cruise, and Kurt (Ian Dick), a bisexual man vacationing with his wife, Kate (Rachel Alig). While Hank isn’t looking for a relationship, he can’t deny his immediate attraction to Kurt and their intense connection. As Hank struggles to get past his own issues and his past failed relationships, he can’t help but wonder if Kurt is secretly looking for a way to break up the monotony of his seemingly stale marriage. Is this just a vacation fling, or is it a chance for both men to find true happiness?
For this movie, writer/director Rob Williams truly embraced the spirit of independent filmmaking. The whole thing was shot guerrilla-style on a cruise ship and in Mexico (Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta) with just three cast members and the director, using an iPhone 6S Plus. This allowed them to shoot in 4K resolution and get stunning shots of the various locations, while also having the flexibility to shoot fast and still get amazing performances.
