Taking place over the course of four years – or, more specifically, four consecutive Valentine’s Days – this achingly romantic new indie from Filipino auteur Adolfo Alix Jr. takes an intimate look at the complicated relationship between two college buddies. Derek (Sebastian Castro) has had a string of girlfriends – none of whom he has hung onto for very long. All the while, after each break-up, his best friend Mark (Mikoy Morales) has been waiting on the sidelines – ready to clean Derek’s wounds while harboring secret romantic feelings. Through intrusive, carefully selected long takes, we’re invited to observe the pair year after year and witness as the tension between them escalates. Morales and Castro give exceptional, often heartbreaking performances in this thoughtful and patient romance – wherein the awkward silences and furtive glances speak volumes.
2016, Great Britain
In a paradise of sun and sea, three young people on the brink of adulthood navigate the complexities of love, sex and secrecy with disastrous consequences. Lily and Finn meet one drunken night in a club and begin the perfect summer romance – until they meet up with Lily’s younger brother Jamie and sexual alliances are tested. As the temperature rises outside, the heat between these three individuals brings tensions to a boiling point. An intimate look into the strains of familial bonds and awakened romance, Palace of Fun explores how far young people will go to keep up appearances and maintain their identity. As secrets are revealed, you can’t help but become compliant in the debauched behavior of these dubious characters. Palace of Fun envelops the viewer in an irresistible world of questionable morals and fervent intentions.
2016, United States
Certainly not for all tastes, this sexually explicit (you’ve been warned) provocation from controversial filmmakers Charles Lum and Todd Verow packs a hell of a punch. Sex and the Silver Gays tells the idiosyncratic story of the randy NYC chapter of a national elder gay men’s organization. Amidst their flurry of elderly activities, the members also actively participate in monthly sex parties. These octogenarian orgiasts invite us to their intimate gatherings, explicitly illustrate their carnal activities, and explain to us who they are, their own shared histories, and what it means to their lives to share joyful, consensual sexual celebrations together for a long as may be possible. It’s either the most explicit documentary you’re likely to see or the most thoughtful and oddly uplifting porn film. Either way, it’s worth a look.
2013, Israel
In this intelligent and emotional Israeli film set in 1989 Tel Aviv, Boaz (incredibly sexy male model Yoav Reuveni) is a linguistics student committed to his loving girlfriend, Noa. But soon Boaz is questioning his life when he begins receiving a series of obsessive love letters from another man. They expose the inner world of their author, who is deeply closeted – and knows plenty about him, including Boaz’s past attraction to other men.
