Coming Soon: A Place to Be

Writer-director Tadeo Garcia follows up his 2004 debut feature On the Downlow with A Place to Be, a powerful love story set against the backdrop of the controversial U.S. immigration system.

Both Abel (Nelson A. Rodriguez), who works in Chicago in social services, and Diego (Andrew L. Saenz), an auto mechanic, have waited a long time for the love they have yearned for. After several chance meetings, the two men finally hook up and quickly fall deeply for one another. But Diego has been hiding a secret: he’s an undocumented immigrant and his repeated attempts to attain citizenship have led nowhere.

Out This Week: Cas

TLA Releasing presents a collection of three films that examine the different effects the addition of a third party has on a modern gay relationship. Essentially, it’s a threesome about threesomes – and we’re excited for it. At 50 minutes in length, Cas, the headliner of this collection which doubles as the title for the collection in general, is somewhere between a short and a feature. Filmed in the Netherlands, it won the “Best International Feature” Award at FilmOut San Diego in 2017.

In Cas, the seemingly rock-solid relationship shared by 29-year-old Pepijn (Wieger Windhorst) and 33-year-old Sjors (Kevin Hassing) is put in jeopardy when they invite a lively 20-year-old student named Cas (Felix Meyer) to sleep on their couch until he finds a place of his own. Gradually, as Pepijn and Sjors both fall head over heels in love with Cas’ laconic charms, they are forced to reconsider all of their shared future plans. Is Cas a real threat to their relationship… or might he be a blessing in disguise?

Yesterday, we published a list of our favorite gay sex scenes from the past several years. Today, we may have found a new contender thanks to writer-director Leopoldo Laborde‘s Boy Undone. The trailer alone is pretty hot and heavy.

Two young men spend the night together after meeting the previous evening in a notorious gay club. The next day, however, the host wakes to find the boy he picked up bewildered and confused, unable to remember his name or anything about his past. Lacking any type of identification or obvious clues, the boys begin to search for the truth among fragments of memories that may or may not prove reliable. A chilling homoerotic thriller, Boy Undone is queer guerrilla filmmaking at its most intense.

Screwed (originally titled Pihalla) is a brand-new, must-see Finnish drama, where seventeen-year-old Miku and Elias (Mikko Kauppila and Valtteri Lehtinen) find themselves – and each other – during an idyllic summer in the Finnish countryside. Love is not as easy as it seems.

Seventeen year old Miku (Kauppila) is “just some dude,” devoid of personality, at least according to his brother. After a party-turned-rager that destroys his home, Miku is doomed to spend the rest of the summer at his family cottage, where both his parents avoid dealing with their own budding relationship crisis. But the calm of the Finnish countryside takes a turn for something strange when Miku meets Elias (Lehtinen). The boys have nothing in common except for their age and dysfunctional families. But something is pulling them together.

Out This Week: About Us

Diego (co-writer/director Thiago Cazado) has to leave his hometown in Brazil to attend a film school in California for 4 years. He also has to leave behind everything he has ever loved… including Matheus (Rodrigo Bittes), a handsome young man with whom he fell madly in love and shared passionate moments. Ten years later, back in Brazil, he decides to write a novel about their relationship using his camera instead of his pen. This heartfelt biopic shows how passion can increase our motivation in life but how making choices can be cruel for passion.

The young, independent, Brazilian directors/ producers behind the touching new gay romance About Us have previously released three short films on the internet, which earned views totaling more than one million. After this excellent initial feedback, the decision was made to auto-finance their first feature film relating the intense and passionate relationship one of them had with a handsome lover. The movie was filmed in four months with local actors from Brasilia. Some of them are famous, some are beginners, but all of them were highly involved into the project. Thiago Cazado, who plays the protagonist and co-wrote and directed the film, is very active on the art scene in Brasilia on stage and in clubs where he works as an actor and as a DJ.
